For the second straight night Russia struck Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones, with editors tracking the toll upward through the morning from two women killed in the capital to a child killed in Vyshgorod and five dead nationally. Damage was reported in four districts, to energy infrastructure including the Trypilska plant, a supermarket and embassy grounds, while the Air Force said five Zircon and Iskander missiles were intercepted amid a prolonged alert and continuing drone attack.
By midday the story became energy. President Zelensky and officials described the barrage as the start of a massive pre-winter campaign against Kyiv's power system, and coverage shifted to emergency blackouts in the capital — the first this autumn — expanding to scheduled outages in Kyiv and three regions from 1 October.
Separately the prime minister warned of an uncovered 2026 budget gap threatening war financing.
